Background: Paediatric antibiotic prescription is a major concern in terms of public health since infections are the most frequent cause of childhood disease. The aim of this hospital-based cross sectional study was to assess the pattern of antibiotic use in the paediatric ward of RIMS hospital, Manipur, India. Methods: A retrospective study of six months duration was carried out for the month of October 2016 to March 2017. A total number of 200 patients case sheets were utilized for our study from paediatric in-patients department of RIMS hospital, Manipur. The data collected was then analysed for various prescribing indicators as laid down by world health organisation (WHO) for analysis of drug use parameters. Results: The mean age of paediatric patient was 2.1 years. The average number of drugs per encounter was 5.14. The average number of antibiotic per patient was 2.11. In present study antibiotic were 41% of total drugs prescribed. Most common prevalence of disease among study patients sample was acute gastroenteritis. The most commonly prescribed antibiotic was Ceftriaxone followed by Amikacin. In present study 8.2% of antibiotics were prescribed in generic name. Polypharmacy was evident from the study. Conclusions: Antibiotic prescribing in children is relatively high in RIMS, Imphal, Manipur. Prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics though has increased demonstrably which   h may result in development of bacterial resistance; however, development of guidelines for antibiotic prescription and use of appropriate drugs for the disease can result in minimizing the unfavourable use of antibiotics in children

    Get PDF
Background: Pharmacology, like any other branch of medicine, is progressing by leaps and bounds. Attempts have been made all over India to make the teaching of pharmacology more interesting and relevant. The course assessment instruments like feedback may help to know about the pros and cons of teaching and assessment methods. Currently, student’s feedback represents the primary means used by most programs to assess their methodology. Methods: A questionnaire was designed and given to second-year medical students to fill in and make suggestions according to the options given and were also free to express their own opinion at various places. Results: Majority of the students showed preference for tutorials, short answer questions and revision classes. About one third of the students felt that more group discussions should be introduced during teaching sessions. Students’ interest in microteaching and problem based learning was evident from their feedbacks. Conclusions: There is a need of conducting few microteaching sessions and more of clinical oriented problem based learning with MCQ based revisions at the end of each class in the pharmacology teaching at undergraduate level

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of ethanolic extract of aerial part of Phyllanthus fraternus Web. leaves (EEPF) using adult earthworms (Pheretimaposthuma). Methods: Adult earthworms (24in number) were divided into 4 groups with 6 worms in each group (n=6). The anthelmintic activity of EEPF at two different doses (25 mg/ml and 50 mg/ml) were evaluated by assessing the time of paralysis (min) and time of death (min) of the earthworms. Albendazole (25 mg/ml) was used as standard and 2% gum acacia as control. Results: Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA followed by Bonferroni test. P<0.05 was considered as significant. The result showed that EEPF had significant anthelmintic activity (p<0.001) but less potent than the standard drug albendazole. Conclusion: EEPF demonstrated significant anthelmintic activity but less potent than the standard drug albendazole. However, further studies with higher doses are required to evaluate the dose-dependent activity and to evaluate the exact mechanism responsible for anthelmintic activity

Background: The purpose of this study is to assess the functional outcome of the cases with advanced thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) arthritis treated with trapeziectomy and ligament reconstruction tendon interposition (LRTI) in terms of visual analogue scale (VAS), disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) score, Kapandji score, range of motion (ROM) of radial and volar abduction of the thumb, grip power, key pinch and the height of the trapezial space. Methods: In a prospective before and after interventional study of 30 patients with the advanced thumb CMC joint arthritis underwent the procedure. An average follows up period was 17.9 months. Results: The mean VAS decreased from 8.17 to 2.70. The mean Kapandji score and DASH score improved from 3.47 and 71.62 preoperative to 8.23 and 14.46 postoperative.  Mean ROM for radial and volar abduction increased from 42.57° and 48° to 61°and 64.73° respectively. Mean key pinch power and grip power increased from 2.80 kg and 3.47 kg to 4.70 kg and 9.01 kg respectively.  There was a significant decrease in height of the trapezial space. Three patient complaint of the persistent pain at the surgical site and not much improvement in the DASH score. Conclusions:  Trapeziectomy with LRTI using flexor carpi radialis (FCR) transfer is an effective treatment for the advanced thumb CMC arthritis. This procedure stabilizes thumb metacarpal and provide enough support which prevents the collapse of metacarpal into dead space
